A sociomaterial conceptualization of flows in industrial ecology

چکیده
A major starting point in industrial ecology (IE) is that reaching ecological sustainability requires understanding relations between human actions and material (tangible) flows. IE studies have enabled assessments of different technical sociotechnical configurations but only to a limited degree provided concepts support the design interventions for ecologies. We contribute by proposing sociomaterial flow approach, here applied life cycle thinking. After problematizing some common IE, key concepts, procedure, variants proposed approach are presented. Towards a Conceptualization of Sociomaterial Entanglement
In knowledge representation, socio-technical systems can be modeled as multiagent systems in which the local knowledge of each individual agent can be seen as a context. In this paper we propose formal ontologies as a means to describe the assumptions driving the construction of contexts as local theories and to enable interoperability among them. In particular, we present two alternative conce...

Industrial Ecology aims to inform decision making about the environmental impacts of industrial production processes by tracking and analyzing resource use and flows of industrial products, consumer products and wastes. Quantifying the patterns of use of materials and energy in different societies is one area of research in Industrial Ecology. An extensive literature is devoted in particular to...

The exchange of wastes, by-products, and energy among closely situated firms is one of the distinctive features of the applications of industrial ecological principles. This at= ticle examines the industrial district at Kalundborg, Denmark, often labeled as an “industrial ecosystem” or “industrial symbiosis” because ofthe many links among the firms. The forces that led to its evolution and to the...
متن کاملIndustrial ecology: a philosophical introduction.
By analogy with natural ecosystems, an industrial ecology system, in addition to minimizing waste production in processes, would maximize the economical use of waste materials and of products at the ends of their lives as inputs to other processes and industries. This possibility can be made real only if a number of potential problems can be solved. These include the design of wastes along with...

This article proposes a multi-disciplinary and systemic approach to sustainable consumption that combines environmental considerations of energy usage from a life-cycle perspective with a social understanding of consumption grounded in economic anthropology. The goal is to understand both consumption patterns and drivers, with a focus on household energy consumption used for cooling in Metro Ma...
